Applications That Do Not Play Well With All Palm Units

AppSlipRotate.prc and StatusBarLib.prc
These two applications should ONLY be on a Tungsten T3 PDA, if they are on a TX it will make the virtual graffiti area disappear and you will lose some functionality.

This simple freeware application makes it possible to sync all legacy Palm devices with the newest V-6.2 Palm Desktop. Just click here to download this little application. Palm claims that the V-6.2 desktop won’t work with older devices, but Palm HotSync Setup fixes that issue.

Outlook 2010 Patch file

Outlook 2010 is a little more complicated and Palm did not bother to create a file to make this happen however there is a solution provided by a third party, here is the link.  You can not use this if your version of Outlook is the 64 bit version, it must be the 32 bit version.  The 32 bit version will work on a 64 bit version of Windows so you can uninstall the Outlook 64 bit version and install the 32 bit version.

Graffiti 1

Convert your Palm TX Graffiti 2 to 1, binaries were patched to work with PalmOS 5.4 (TX, LifeDrive, Tungsten T5, and Treo 650).  The trick to installing this is to transfer the two files by either beaming them from another Palm or by using a SD card, use a program like FileZ to transfer the files, you can not put the files on by using a hotsync.  It can be difficult to remove the Graffiti 1 so be sure you have a current backup or hotsync so you can do a hard reset so you can get back Graffiti 2 then resync your data.

Filez is an easy to use file manager for the Palm OS. Use it to remove, beam, or modify any file on your handheld.  It’s useful for removing old programs/databases and for telling some files to back themselves up.

Manualy Starting the Palm Hotsync Manager

Turn on HotSync Manager

Reproduced from the Palm Support Knowledge-base

Before you can initiate a HotSync operation, the HotSync Manager
application on your Windows or Mac computer must be turned on.
By default, when you installed the Palm Desktop software, the HotSync
Manager is set to turn itself on every time you start your computer.
However, if you have changed this option or manually turned off HotSync
Manager, you will need to turn it back on again.
Windows

  1. From the Windows Start Menu, click on Programs.
  2. Click on Palm (or Handspring, if you have an
    older device).
  3. Click on HotSync Manager. This will launch the
    HotSync Manager application.

After completing these steps, look in the Windows System Tray.
You should see the HotSync Manager icon, which looks like a circle with
a red arrow and a blue arrow. If you do not see this icon, you may need
to re-install the Palm Desktop software, if you do not have the
original CD you can purchase one here;
https://www.palmdr.com/cart/palm-install-disks-c-21.html

If you have a Windows 64 bit OS then you will also need to install the
64 bit drivers, more information can be found here;
https://www.palmdr.com/windows-7-64-bit-usb-drivers

Macintosh

  1. Go to Mac Hard Drive : Applications
    : Palm : HotSync Manager Note:
    If you have an older device, HotSync Manager may be in the “Handspring”
    folder.
  2. Double-click on the HotSync Manager application
    icon to launch it.

Mac Hotsync Manager

Tip: If you can’t find the file using the steps above,
there’s an alternate method: go to the Finder, hit COMMAND + F to
invoke the Find command, and search for the words “HotSync Manager.”
When you’ve found it, double-click on the HotSync Manager application
to launch it. Make a note of the application’s location for future
reference.

  1. Make sure the circle for “Enable HotSync software” is filled.

SDS(Sudden Death Syndrome)

This is a condition that the Palm Tungsten E2 and Z22 PDA units can have.

Symptoms

A device that is suffering from this condition will be completely dead, if the SDS repair has not been done to the unit then the only way to remove it from this condition is to let the battery run down completely so it can reset properly and try to start up again where it might again go into the SDS condition.

Cause

The condition is caused by the failure of the PDAs internal oscillator (clock) to not start.  The oscillator is the heartbeat of the unit, without a heartbeat it is dead.  In most cases the battery must be very low to enter into this condition so if your unit is prone to SDS then it is best to try and keep your battery at around 50%.  It is best to have a small circuit installed in the PDA that allows  the oscillator to be reset when the reset button is press, our repair team and perform this repair.  Once the repair has been completed the unit may still enter the SDS condition but can easily be fixed by doing a simple reset from the back of the unit.

Repair

We install a circuit that will allow the oscillator to be restarted if the reset button is pressed.  The only drawback to this repair is the date and time will need  to be reset after each pressing of the reset button.

Windows 7, 8 and 10 – 64 Bit USB Drivers

Instructions for installing the 64 bit driver for Vista and Windows 7, 8 and 10

Contrary to what many say, the Palm Desktop will work on the new Windows operating systems, Vista, Windows 7, 8 and 10, with either the 32 or 64 bit OS.  If you have the 32 bit OS then do not install the driver below as it is not necessary.  If you have the 64 bit OS you will need the driver below and once it is installed your Palm will hotsync with your computer just as previous systems.  To find out if you have the 32 or 64 bit OS please use the link below;

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218

We can arrange to dial into your computer and install the required driver remotely, the typical fee for this service is $35 for the first 30 minutes, please see our PalmDr Phone Service for details and available hours.

The ACEECA corporation has developed a 64 bit driver for their handhelds, running the Palm OS, so the instructions refer to an Aceeca device/PDA – just ignore this labeling and know they mean the Palm device.  This driver is only necessary for the USB driver, it is not necessary for the BlueTooth(BT), Infra Red(IR), WiFi, or serial.

1) Install the Palm Desktop software from the CD as normal.   You must have the Palm Desktop software installed before installing the 64 bit drivers.   If you do not have the installation CD you can order one from our website here;
Install CDs

2) Download 64 bit driver instructions from the link below.
Windows 64 Bit Insturctions

3) Download the 64 bit drivers, this is a Zip file so you must extract it to a place you can later find;
Windows 64 Bit Drivers Download

For more information read the following link;
http://forum.brighthand.com/palm-tx/281989-how-install-new-aceeca-64bit-drivers-tx.html

Windows 8 and 10

With Windows 7, 8 and 10 you should be use the 6.2 version of the Palm desktop in most cases.  The installation is the same for Windows 7, 8 and 10, if you run into a problem of only seeing the Media in the Palm Desktop then you must be sure to start the Hotsync Manager and Palm Desktop with the “Run as administrator”.

These instructions are a work in progress so an changes/problems will greatly help others with the same problems so please reply with feedback, good or bad.
